Just in time for TechCrunch Disrupt — A Geek’s Guide to San Francisco

Are you taking the big hike to SF Disrupt this year? Want to prepare yourself for the INTENSE 24 hour Hackathon? Or are you psyching yourself up for the Startup Battlefield?

Well, consider taking a break to explore the totally geeky San Francisco before you leave because there’s more to SF than spending 24 hours in a room lit only by the light of 10,000 MBP screens.

Here’s our pick of the Geek’s Guide to San Francisco:

1. Noisebridge

Looking for a warm up before the Hackathon? Take a trip to Noisebridge, the third hackerspace to be started in the US. It’s open 24/7 to members and non-members alike and has free workshops and activities for anyone! Noisebridge has won awards for “Best Open Source Playground” and “Best Hacker Playground” so be sure to check it out if you’re looking for some inspiration! Click here to see the weekly events and I’m SURE you’ll find something weird and cool to fit your fancy.

Neighborhood: Mission

2. Audium

If you’re psyching your ears up for a 24 hour dubstep-filled hacking spree, take a break from the noise and check out Audium. Described as a Sound Sculptured Space, Audium is a theatre made up of a floating floor, suspended ceiling and sloping walls covered in 169 speakers which are controlled by a performer who directs the sound through a specially designed console. Sounds are “sculpted” through their movement, direction, speed and intensity on multiple planes in space and if that doesn’t sound cool to you… well, I can’t help you, man. Performances are weekly so step away from the wheeEERR-bow-bow-bow of dubstep and seriously check this out!

3. Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival

Staying up for 24 hours fueled only on Redbull and coffee can be tough, so give your taste buds a break and visit the Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival on September 14th and 15th for a smaller caffeine hit.  If you’re not sold by the fact that there’s an “Earthquake” Ice Cream Eating Contest where six lucky people (one of which could be you!) battle to eat the famous Ghirardelli “Earthquake” Sundae as fast as they can using ONLY their hands, then I think you might need to sort out your priorities.

4. Float Matrix

… but not that kind of matrix.

Can’t stop thinking about your next hack or the bug you can’t seem to find in your code? Relax in the Float Matrix, a sensory deprivation tank (Yes, just like those in The Sims 3!) where you can chill out in “a pool of saturated epson salts in complete darkness and silence with no gravity, no light, no sound” and seriously either 1. Think deeper, know the code, become the code, be the code and find your bug, or 2. meditate and think about life in general. Seriously cool stuff.

5. Peoples Barber

Spent so long on your current project that you’ve forgotten how much time has passed and your hair’s now waist length and TOTALLY not a fun time? Take a trip to Peoples Barber for a haircut… and free beer. That’s right. FREE BEER. I don’t think you heard me the first time. Free. Beer. While you wait and while your hair’s being cut. Just make sure you’ve got an idea written down before you go in because if code’s on your mind when you go in, code might come out ON your mind (and head) when you go out.

Nah, man. This won’t seem cool now, but we’ll see what’s on your mind after a few beers.
